It was not really a night train but a flight to Lisbon and one of the best choices we have ever made for a holiday destination. Lisbon is a beautiful city – filled with history, at times messy, alive, filled with surprise views after every corner and with a rhythm of its own.
You can fly from Vienna directly with TAP Portugal (Check Felix for good prices) and stay in a flat or a hotel. We used Airbnb for the first time and had a great experience. We stayed at this flat right here and if you register using this link you get 18 EUR off your first stay.
Lisbon is in the top 5 most popular Erasmus destinations. Students spill out onto the streets of Bairro Alto and their night is over only when the sun starts to rise.
This funicular tram takes you from the plaza Restauradores to Barrio Alto where you will have a lovely point of view of the city. It is originally from the late 1800’s and is now a national monument. You have to try it!
TIP: If you get a Hop on Hop off bus you can enjoy the funicular tram and other goodies for free.
The airport is in the city so you often see airplanes in some part of the town.
Padrão dos Descobrimentos is a monument to the discoveries located on the Tagus River restuary in Santa Maria de Belem. It celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery during the 15th and 16th centuries. The first one is Henrique of Portugal, Duke of Viseu and is regarded as the initiator of this age.
The Belem Tower played an important role in the discoveries of the era and was commissioned as a defense system on the Tagus river.
“We leave something of ourselves behind when we leave a place, we stay there, even though we go away. And there are things in us that we can find again only by going back there.”
― Pascal Mercier, Night Train to Lisbon
